MANAGER OF HIGH AND MEDIUM VOLTAGE COMMISSIONING

SUMMARY

 

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Manager of High and Medium Voltage Commissioning to oversee and lead the commissioning of electrical substations for our projects. This role is responsible for managing all commissioning activities while ensuring compliance with safety standards across all substation installations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the power industry, particularly in substation operations and commissioning, with strong leadership and project management skills. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Transmission and Substation Project Management and Construction, or another management personnel that the CEO of the Company may designate. This position reports to the Ankeny, IA office but will maintain a hybrid schedule of working out of their home office and the Ankeny, IA office, when needed. Working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm or 9:00am to 6:00pm local time. This position is expected to travel up to 30% of the time.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
 

  • Operational Implementation:
    • Lead teams of technicians in the testing, energization, and documentation of performance of high and medium voltage associated equipment
    • Develop and enforce project workflows, tools, and templates to standardize operations and improve efficiency.
    • Oversee all commissioning activities for electrical substations and medium voltage equipment, including equipment testing, troubleshooting, and performance verification.
    • Maintain all testing equipment required to complete commissioning activities
    • Ensure proper documentation of all commissioning activities, including test reports, certificates, and inspection records.
    • Prepare commissioning documentation for handover to clients and stakeholders.
    • Ensure that all commissioning work complies with company, industry, and regulatory standards.

 

  • Technical Support and Problem Solving:
    • Act as a technical resource for project teams, providing guidance on troubleshooting and problem resolution.
    • Conduct site visits to monitor project progress, troubleshoot challenges, and support team with on-the-ground decision-making.

 

  • Team Leadership and Development:
    • Supervise and mentor other team members, fostering a collaborative and results-oriented culture.
    • Support talent development initiatives, including training programs, performance evaluations,and succession planning.
    • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement across all projects.

 

  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Track project performance metrics, including schedule adherence, budget management, and safety compliance, to identify areas for improvement.
    • Prepare and present project status updates to the highlighting risks and opportunities.
    • Lead post-project reviews to capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

 

 

  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to align efforts and maintain consistency across all projects.
    • Act as a liaison between field teams and executive leadership, ensuring project challenges and successes are communicated effectively.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and vendors to support project and organizational objectives.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCES

 

  • Knowledge and experience with the installation, service, maintenance, and testing of electrical power systems             
  • NETA acceptance and maintenance testing, NETA/IEEE standards, OSHA/NFPA 70E

Standards, NFPA 99, infrared thermography surveys

  • Strong understanding of substation design, operations, and commissioning processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrical equipment testing, protection, and control systems.
  • Proven track record of managing complex projects, with strong project management skills.
  • Expertise in safety, regulatory compliance, and quality standards in the power industry.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with Procore for project management and reporting.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in commissioning electrical substations or related power systems.
