DIRECTOR OF COMMISSIONING

SUMMARY

The Director of Commissioning is responsible for the supervision and technical support of the Commissioning group. The position will act as the head of the Commissioning Department and fulfill the electrical checkout, testing, energization, and power plant control review before substantial completion. The position is responsible for reviewing owner requirements, scheduling, employee relations, standardization, and best practices for the completion of commissioning a full power plant to grid operation.

 

 

This position reports to the Senior Director of Transmission & Distribution/ Commissioning, or another management personnel that the CEO of the Company may designate. This position reports to the Ankeny, AI office but will maintain a hybrid schedule of working out of their home office and the jobsite. Working hours are Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm or 9:00am to 6:00pm local time. This position is expected to travel up to 30% of the time.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build a functioning commissioning team that will perform all electrical, physical, and testing activities for commissioning activities.
  • Develop, train, and promote good practices across the team to fulfill the company, project, and department goals.
  • Maintain a safety culture and bring industry-leading practices to the organization.
  • Work with the team to plan, coordinate, assign, and schedule commissioning work tasks including project scope development, cost estimating, proposal development, commissioning documentation, and assembling the onsite team.
  • Develop and own department goals to move forward into a top-tier EPC contractor.
  • Develop standards, checklists, and commissioning practices that are benchmarked to industry-accepted standards.
  • Develop relationships with other departments and work to collaborate with each team to bring commissioning needs back to the organization.
  • Develop benchmarking practices for field activities and commissioning activities.
  • Build a training and progression plan to detail new employees and progress them through the organization to develop skillsets and knowledge to promote staff.
  • Knowledge of commissioning activities, standards, testing, and leadership.
  • Works with other department efforts in the development and implementation of standards for equipment, material, design, and construction requirements for transmission substations to aid commissioning activities when installed.
  • Provides input to yearly budget development related to commissioning staff, software, and test equipment procurement.
  • Provides input into project estimates with estimators for commissioning activities for projects. Aids in cost variance analysis post-project completion to improve estimates.
  • Coaches, mentors, perform performance reviews, and guides training/staff development.
  • Interviews and evaluates candidates for employment and makes hiring recommendations.
  • Approves expense statements and office leave requests.
  • Actively participates in industry forums, conferences, and other company initiatives to support company's mission.
  • Ability to travel up to 30%
  • Perform other duties and special projects, as assigned by the Vice President of Contract Management
  • Regular attendance, in accordance with company's attendance policy and supervisory assignment, is an essential job duty requirement for this position


 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of directly related electric utility, EPC, or commissioning experience.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in commissioning activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric system components and related communications and protection functions.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing employees in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable commercial agility; ability to reorder critical commissioning activities based on new commercial requirements, under tight deadlines and sometimes changing requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Stationary Position: frequently remains stationary up to 90% of the time and sitting up to 8 hours in a day

  • Hearing and Speech: frequently communicates with the ability to hear and talk on a regular basis with employees, coworkers, and all personnel matters; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
  • Sight: frequent use of sight to detect images on computer, office documents, and office objects near and far
  • Climb: occasionally ascends/descends on stairway to get to office upper and lower floors
  • Travel: up to 30% as needed
